Government
Grant Application - What Does It Take?
If you watch much television, you have probably seen those television
ads offering information on how to get 'free money from the
government.' While these ads claim to be offering insider information,
what is really being offered is information on how to find and fill out
government grant applications.
There are a couple of things wrong with these commercials. It isn't so
much that they are wrong, but that they are not really portraying
government grants as they are. First off, it is important to understand
that government grants are free money in the sense that they are not a
loan with an interest rate; that is where the 'free' part ends.
When the government offers a grant, there are certain requirements that
must be met in order for a person or organization to offer it, and
these must be specified on the various government grant applications
that are filled out. Even after the grants are obtained, not
adhering to certain specifications can lead to loss of grant money,
which is never something that any person or organization wants to have
to go through.
Organizations or people who receive grant money do so for a specific
purpose. After the government grant applications are all filled out and
sent in to the necessary places, the waiting game begins. Certain
amounts of money are allocated to certain organizations after the
government grant applications have been reviewed, and the money is to
be used for the purposes deemed necessary.
A good example of something that an organization may use a grant for is
after school homework programs for inner city children; if the grant
application specifies a need for such a program and the grant is
awarded, that is what it must be used for.
The people who run that organization are responsible for ensuring that
the funds are used correctly; if not, they face the consequences. Of
course, the consequences vary on a case by case basis but begin with
the loss of funding.
The
Government Grant Application Process
It is not too difficult to understand how the government grant
application process. It starts out at the Federal level; Congress
reviews and approves a budget which outlines the funding that will be
allocated for certain purposes. Once grant funding has been allocated
for these certain purposes, these funds are made available through the
Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance, a listing of all grant money
available. From there, people are welcome to fill out the government
grant applications to the best of their ability and submit them.
Keep in mind that a grant application is not like a school application
or a job application; it is more detailed and a great deal more
lengthy. The questions that are asked are important and must be
answered in a certain way for an organization to even be able to dream
about grant funding. In many cases, professional grant writers are
brought on to smooth out the process and put their professional touch
to government grant applications.
Common Grant
Application Mistakes
When it comes to applying for government grants, things must be done in
a certain way. There are certain mistakes that you can be sure not to
avoid, as it is all too easy to make mistakes that you are not aware
of. First of all, although it seems self explanatory, thorough checking
for spelling and grammar errors is imperative to the government grant
application process.
In addition, providing well rounded, thoughtful, and unbiased answers
to all questions is important as well. If it doesn't like you have put
a great deal of thought into the ideas that you present in your
application, it will go into the loser pile in a moment's notice.
Applying for a government grant is no small task, but if awarded
federal funding can do your organization or cause a great deal of good.
Just be sure that if you apply, you are able to fulfill the obligations
set forth and take it from there. If you aren't sure, wait until you
are ready—you have more years of grant opportunities to come.
